The “Black Box Drawings” are a commentary on human intention and collaboration with a system outside of oneself. Within an engineering or computer science community, the term “black box” refers to a system interfacing with the world via inputs and outputs, but that processes data in a way invisible or opaque to outside observers. The series of drawings are executed blindly — using a mixed-reality headset as a very expensive blindfold. Seeing only a large opaque black box instead of the hand, pen, or paper surface, the only feedback the artist receives comes from a contact microphone placed under the metallic table surface, which greatly amplifies every movement of the pen and hands on the surface. The act of drawing becomes a sonic moment, freed from composition or plan.
