017 Dis/continuum solo exhibition at Central Utah Art Center

Dis/continuum uses topography and mineralogy as metaphors to examine cognitive boundaries, perception of landscape, and states of becoming rather than being. There are three components to the exhibition: Temporary Formations lists almost 200 terms for geographic landforms as vinyl text attached directly to the wall. Pile Gestalten explores the threshold where a few rocks or several rocks becomes a pile of rocks. Groups of various materials such as mulch, rock salt and gravel are arranged and outlined on the floor in an attempt to define their respective boundaries. And, Relational Wavespace: Mineral Crystals sonifies the molecular structures of mineral crystals, creating suites of pure sonic tones installed in the ceiling rafters.

The essay by Jill Dawsey, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Utah Museum of Fine Arts, places the work within a context of postminimalist installation, the Nonsites of Robert Smithson and the writings of Henri Lefebvre. Click link above to read the essay in pdf format.
